DEVELOPER RECOGNIZED FOR CARRIAGE HOUSE DONATION

Patrick O’Neill, a Mendham resident and president of Fenix Investment & Development, Inc., was awarded a plaque acknowledging his efforts in donating a historic carriage house to the Borough. Mendham Mayor, Richard G. Kraft, and Councilman, Larry Haverkost made the presentation to O’Neill at Borough Park off Mountain Avenue, site of the fully restored, 100-year-old structure.
Now serving Borough residents and visitors as a much- welcomed addition to the park’s grounds, the building was once slated for demolition at its century-old location on Prospect Street. O’Neill envisioned otherwise and, using his own resources, relocated, restored and brought up to code the 1,000 square-foot structure which has both enhanced and advanced the ongoing revival of the Borough Park area. An award-winning developer, O’Neill originally offered the house to Mendham in order to avert its razing and ensuing subdivision on the former property.
True to his philosophy of the importance of community involvement and preservation of neighborhood history, he vigorously pursued and acquired help from associates and suppliers to ensure the functional destiny of the carriage house. Substantial cost savings to the Borough notwithstanding, the fully-restored building has enriched the character of one of Mendham’s most-frequented outdoor public areas. According to Borough officials, the building will also serve as a shelter for summer camp children and the concession stand will be made available for special events.
The recent recipient of the coveted Community Builders Association Award (CBA) for building excellence, Fenix Investment & Development, Inc. maintains a reputation as the builder who equates natural landscapes and area history with home styles and their proportions. The Morristown-based firm drew accolades from the CBA for its accomplishments in creating the Georgetowne at Morristown collection of brownstone-style homes in the downtown Morristown area, which – much like Mendham – is in a phase of “rejuvenation.” |
